Uganda, known as the 'Pearl of Africa,' is a vibrant country with a rich cultural tapestry and a growing economy. However, it's not uncommon for Ugandans to travel overseas in search of better opportunities and send money back home. According to the World Bank, remittances to Uganda stood at approximately USD 1.4 billion in 2020, making it an essential part of the country's economy.

Challenges of sending money to Uganda

Like other international money transfers, sending money to Uganda often presents challenges such as high transaction fees, lengthy processing times, complex procedures, and limited payout options. But fear not, because Mama Money has made these obstacles a thing of the past.

  1. High Fees: Traditional banking systems and other remittance services often charge high fees for international transfers. The fees are a flat transfer fee and sometimes an additional percentage of the total amount sent. This means the more money you send, the higher the fee becomes. Sometimes, the sender and receiver may be charged for the transaction.
  2. Long Processing Times: With traditional money transfer methods, it can take several days for the recipient to receive the money in Uganda. This is due to various procedures, checks and balances that the financial institutions have to follow to ensure the legitimacy and safety of the transfer. This can be inconvenient, especially in emergencies where funds are needed immediately.
  3. Complex Procedures: Some traditional banks and money transfer services require paperwork and several forms of identification for both the sender and the receiver. Additionally, the sender might need to provide proof of income and explain the purpose of the transfer. This can make the process of sending money home quite tedious and time-consuming.
  4. Limited Payout Options: Access to traditional banking institutions can be limited in some rural parts of Uganda. This means recipients might travel long distances to reach the nearest bank or money transfer agent to receive their funds. Furthermore, traditional banking hours can make it difficult for recipients to access their money outside regular business hours.
  5. Security Concerns: There are also concerns about the security of international transfers. These can be around the risk of sensitive information being intercepted, the potential for scams, or the physical safety risk in carrying large amounts of cash from the payout location to home.

Mama Money addresses all these challenges, offering a secure, fast, easy-to-use service with a lower fee structure. With mobile money payout options, recipients in even the most remote parts of Uganda can receive their money directly on their phone, eliminating the need to travel long distances or worry about banking hours.

Our mission is to make the process as smooth as possible, so you can focus on what matters: supporting your loved ones.
