Bank Statements and Proof of Account in South Africa

If someone in South Africa has asked you for a bank statement or proof of bank account, you are in the right place. Employers need it to set up salary payments. Landlords ask for it before signing a lease. Financial institutions want it when you apply for a loan. It is one of the most common documents you will be asked to provide.

For most foreign nationals, this creates a problem: you cannot get a bank statement from a traditional South African bank if you cannot open an account there, and most traditional banks require a South African ID and proof of address to open one. The Mama Money Card solves this directly. It is a bank account you can open with your passport or asylum document, and your bank statement is available to download from the Mama Money App at any time.

This guide covers what a bank statement is, how to read one, what proof of bank account means and when you need it, and how to get yours through Mama Money.

What is a bank statement?

A bank statement is an official record of all the transactions in your bank account over a set period, usually one month. It is produced by your bank or financial institution and shows your name, account number, all deposits and withdrawals, any fees charged, and your opening and closing balance for that period.

What a bank statement includes

Account holder details

Your name and account number, confirming the statement belongs to you. These are usually at the top of the document.

Statement period

The start and end dates the statement covers, usually one calendar month. Some institutions ask for statements covering the last one to three months.

Opening balance

The amount in your account at the start of the statement period, before any transactions during that month.

Transactions

Every deposit, withdrawal, fee, and payment during the period, listed by date with a description. Each transaction shows whether money came in (credit) or went out (debit).

Closing balance

The amount remaining in your account at the end of the statement period, after all transactions during that month.

Bank details

The bank's name, branch code, and contact information, which confirm which institution produced the statement.

How to read your bank statement

1
Check the account summary first

Confirm the opening and closing balance match what you expect. If the closing balance is not what you thought, look through the transactions to find the difference. This is the fastest way to spot an error or a fee you were not aware of.

2
Go through each transaction

Check every line for accuracy. Look for any transaction you do not recognise, any amount that seems wrong, and any payment you did not authorise. If something looks incorrect, contact your bank as soon as possible.

3
Check the fees section

Identify all fees charged during the period. Make sure you understand what each one is for. If a fee looks wrong or unexpected, contact your bank for an explanation.

4
Note any interest or credits

If your account earns interest or you received a salary payment, it will appear as a credit. Check that all expected income is reflected and that the amounts are correct.

5
Save a copy

Download or screenshot your statement and store it somewhere you can find it quickly. You may be asked for statements covering the last one to three months at short notice when applying for rental accommodation or setting up a salary payment.

Mama Money tip

Your statement is always available in the app

With the Mama Money Card, you do not need to visit a branch or request a statement from customer service. Your bank statement is available to download at any time directly from the Mama Money App. Go to the Mama Money Card section, tap "Statement," and select the month you need.

How to get your statement

What is proof of bank account and when do you need it?

Proof of bank account is any official document that confirms you hold a bank account in your name. The most commonly accepted form is a recent bank statement, but a bank confirmation letter or account verification letter may also be accepted depending on what the institution requires.

To be accepted as proof, the document typically needs to show your full name, your account number, and the bank's details. Most institutions ask for a statement that is no more than three months old.

When you will be asked for proof of bank account

💼
Starting a new job

Your employer needs your account details to set up salary payments. They will often ask for a recent bank statement to verify your account number before processing the first payment. This is one of the most common situations where foreign nationals need proof of bank account quickly.

🏠
Renting a property

Landlords and letting agents frequently ask for bank statements as part of a rental application. They use them to confirm you have a working bank account and a history of receiving regular income.

💰
Applying for a loan or credit

Lenders use bank statements to assess your income, spending patterns, and financial stability. They will usually ask for three to six months of statements before approving a loan application.

📋
Government or financial applications

Some government grants, welfare applications, and financial registrations require proof of bank account to process payments correctly and confirm where funds should be directed.

🔄
Setting up a debit order

Service providers often ask for proof of bank account when setting up recurring debit orders for insurance, gym memberships, or subscriptions. They need to confirm your account details before the first deduction.

What counts as proof of bank account

1
Bank statement

A full statement from your bank showing recent transactions, your name, account number, and bank details. This is the most widely accepted form of proof. Most institutions ask for statements from the last one to three months. The Mama Money Card produces a bank statement that is accepted for most of these purposes.

2
Bank confirmation letter

An official letter from your bank confirming that you hold an account with them, including your account number and the date it was opened. Some institutions specifically ask for this rather than a full statement, particularly for formal employment or tenancy agreements.

3
Bank account verification letter

Similar to a confirmation letter, but specifically states that your account is active and in good standing. Useful for rental applications and employer setups where the institution wants to confirm the account is current, not just that it exists.

Practical tips for managing your bank statements

📁
Keep digital copies ready

Most landlords and employers ask for statements from the last one to three months, and they often ask at short notice. Keep your three most recent statements downloaded and saved on your phone. With the Mama Money Card, they are always available in the app whenever you need them. No need to visit a branch or call customer service.

📅
Check your statement every month

Make it a habit to review your bank statement at least once a month. This helps you spot any transaction you do not recognise, any unexpected fees, or any difference between what you remember spending and what the statement shows. Catching an error early is much easier to resolve than chasing something from several months ago.

🔔
Turn on transaction alerts

The Mama Money App sends real-time notifications whenever money moves in or out of your account. Turning these on means you always know what is happening with your money, without waiting for your monthly statement. If a payment you did not authorise appears, you will know immediately and can freeze your card or contact customer support straight away.

How far back do bank statements need to go for a rental application?
Most landlords and letting agents ask for bank statements from the last one to three months. Some may ask for up to six months if they want to assess your income over a longer period. What is the difference between a bank statement and a proof of bank account letter?
A bank statement is a detailed record of all your transactions over a specific period. A proof of bank account letter (sometimes called a bank confirmation letter) is a shorter document from your bank that simply confirms you hold an account with them, without showing individual transactions. Both serve as proof of bank account, but different institutions may ask for one or the other. A bank statement is more widely accepted and often easier to obtain, as it can be downloaded directly from an app without contacting the bank.
