Diwali 2026: Get Your Money to India in Good Time

Diwali runs over five days, but the sending window closes much sooner than that. By Dhanteras on Friday 6 November, your family wants the money ready. That means your decision isn't really "when is Diwali?" but "when do I need to send so it lands in time?" This guide walks through the practical timing: what each payout method takes to arrive, what to do if you've left it late, and how to make sure your family isn't still waiting when the first diya is lit.

For the full cultural context on each day of the festival, see our Diwali sending guide for South African senders.

The Diwali sending window (not just one day)

It's easy to think of Diwali as Sunday 8 November and plan around that. In reality, your family's spending happens across the whole week, with a specific shape to it.

Thu 5 Nov
Final preparation. Last-minute shopping for sweets, puja supplies, and groceries for the family meals ahead.
Fri 6 Nov
Dhanteras
The biggest spending day. Gold, silver, jewellery, and household item purchases. If any single day calls for the money to be ready, this is it.
Sat 7 Nov
Choti Diwali
Puja preparation. Rangoli materials, flowers, final gift purchases.
Sun 8 Nov
Diwali
The main celebration. Family gatherings, meals, gifts, sweets. Less about spending at this point; more about being together.
Mon 9 Nov
Govardhan Puja
Family gatherings continue. Some regional spending for Gujarati New Year observances.
Tue 10 Nov
Bhai Dooj
The sibling exchange. Many brothers send to sisters on this day specifically. If you're sending for Bhai Dooj, this is the only day with its own distinct sending window later in the festival.
For most Diwali sends, you want the money in your family's hands by Thursday 5 November at the latest. That gives them Dhanteras and the full festival with the funds ready.

How each payout method arrives

Mama Money gives your family two ways to receive the money: a direct bank deposit, or cash they collect in person through Western Union or Muthoot Finance. Both work; what differs is the timing shape and what your family does on their side.

🏦

Direct bank deposit

Within 5 hours, up to 48 in rare cases

Lands straight in your family's Indian bank account. Most transfers clear within about 5 hours, though some banks and payment paths can take up to 48 hours. Your family doesn't need to travel anywhere; the money is just there when they next check their account.

💵

Cash pickup

Within minutes

Available for collection at a Western Union or Muthoot Finance location, usually within minutes of your payment clearing. Your family takes their ID and the reference number to a nearby branch and leaves with the cash in hand.

Which suits your family depends entirely on their situation. If they bank, direct deposit is seamless. If they don't bank, prefer cash, or need the money for Dhanteras shopping where cash is still often the go-to for gold purchases, pickup works. Both carry the same Mama Money fee of 5% or less, and both apply the same live exchange rate.

The one factor that decides for you

How late in the week it is.

If you're sending more than two days before Dhanteras, either method lands comfortably in time. If you're sending the day before, or the morning of, cash pickup is the faster path. For a last-minute send, picking the method with the shorter arrival time is the right call. Everything else (fees, limits, rate) stays the same.

Your week-by-week sending timeline

If you're reading this with Diwali still a comfortable distance away, here's the plan. If you're reading closer to the day, skip to the next section.

4 weeks out
(Mon 12 Oct)
Confirm the plan with your family. Ask what they'd prefer (bank or cash), confirm their details are current, and sort out your Higher Limit upgrade if your total send will be bigger than usual.
2 weeks out
(Mon 26 Oct)
Check the ZAR to INR rate pattern. See the rate timing guide for why sending earlier often converts into slightly more rupees than sending in the last week before Diwali.
1 week out
(Fri 30 Oct)
Ideal send window opens. Any transfer from here will land with time to spare. Bank deposits have the full 48-hour buffer; cash pickup is minutes.
3 days out
(Tue 3 Nov)
Last comfortable window for bank deposits. Gives bank deposits their full buffer to clear ahead of Dhanteras.
1-2 days out
(Wed-Thu)
Cash pickup is the faster option now. If you've left it this late, cash pickup through Western Union or Muthoot Finance arrives within minutes, letting your family collect in time for Dhanteras.
On Dhanteras
(Fri 6 Nov)
Cash pickup only. If you're sending on the day itself, cash pickup is the realistic path. Send early in the morning (South African time) so your family can collect while branches are open in India.

If you've left it late

It happens. Work got busy, the week slipped, and suddenly it's Thursday or Friday and you still haven't sent. Here's what to do.

  • ✓ Pay by EFT in the morning if you can. Cash payment at a retail partner adds a step on your side. If you pay by EFT from your SA bank account, your funds move into Mama Money faster, and your family gets their money faster.
  • ✓ Confirm the exact spelling of your family's name. For cash pickup especially, the name on your transfer must match the name on your family's ID exactly or the branch will refuse the payout. A late send that gets rejected is worse than no send at all.
  • ✓ Send your family the reference number by WhatsApp straight away. They can't collect without it. Copy it directly from the Mama Money app so there's no typo.
  • ✓ Check branch opening hours. Western Union and Muthoot Finance branches often extend hours around Diwali, but not all do. If your family is collecting on Dhanteras itself, confirming the nearest branch is open avoids a wasted trip.
  • ✓ If you can't send at all this year, say so clearly. A WhatsApp message explaining is better than silence. Most families understand life gets in the way; what hurts is being left wondering.

If something goes wrong

Transfers overwhelmingly go through without a hitch. On the rare occasions something doesn't work (a typo in a bank account number, a name mismatch, your family can't get to a branch in time), Mama Money's support team is on WhatsApp.

  • Transfer not arriving. Check the status in the Mama Money app first. If it says "sent" but your family hasn't received, message support on WhatsApp with your reference number.
  • Wrong name or account details entered. Contact support immediately. The sooner the message, the better the chance of recovering the transfer or redirecting it.
  • Family can't collect cash pickup in time. If they can't make it to a branch, support can help with options including redirecting to a different payout method or arranging a refund.

Frequently asked questions

What's the latest I can send and still have the money in time for Dhanteras?
For bank deposits, the latest comfortable window is around Tuesday 3 November (three days before Dhanteras on Friday 6 November). For cash pickup through Western Union or Muthoot Finance, you can send as late as the morning of Dhanteras itself, since cash pickup usually arrives within minutes.
Does the fee differ between bank deposit and cash pickup?
No. Mama Money applies the same fee (5% or less) and the same live ZAR to INR rate to both. The choice is about your family's situation, not about cost.
Which Indian banks does Mama Money support for Diwali transfers?
Many of India's largest banks including State Bank of India, HDFC, ICICI, Axis Bank, Punjab National Bank, Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, Union Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank, South Indian Bank, and many more regional and cooperative banks. The current list is in the Mama Money app.
What if my family wants to collect cash but there's no Western Union near them?
Mama Money also supports Muthoot Finance for cash pickup, which has a very wide network across India including smaller towns. If neither has a nearby location, direct bank deposit is usually the fallback. Message support if you need help checking locations in a specific area.
Can I send to more than one family member for Diwali?
Yes. Each send is a separate transfer. If you want to send to parents, siblings, and nieces or nephews separately, you can set each up in the Mama Money app. All sends count toward your monthly limit.
What's the maximum I can send for Diwali?
Standard accounts can send up to R25,000 per day and R25,000 per month. South African ID holders can upgrade to R50,000 per day and R100,000 per month. If you hold a foreign passport, asylum or refugee document, the Higher Limit is R25,000 per day and up to 75% of your proven monthly income. See the Mama Money limits page.
What's the Diwali 2026 date?
Sunday, 8 November 2026. The full five-day festival runs from Dhanteras on Friday 6 November through Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. For the full cultural context, see our Diwali sending guide.
