Your Mama Money Wallet does more than send money home. It also buys the things you buy every month anyway: airtime for your phone, data for your bundle, electricity for your prepaid meter, and vouchers for the services you use online. All from the same app you already have.
No queue at the shop. No separate wallet or airtime app. No topping up here, paying there, buying vouchers somewhere else. This guide covers what you can buy through your Wallet, how to do it, and a few small habits that make everything smoother.
The Mama Money Wallet is designed to be the practical daily tool for your money. Alongside sending funds home and paying with your Card, it also handles four everyday purchases most South African households buy every month.
Airtime
All major networks
Top up any South African mobile number on MTN, Vodacom, Cell C, or Telkom. Top up your own phone or send airtime to family and friends.
Data
Bundles for every need
Buy data bundles for any network. From small daily bundles for a specific need to bigger monthly bundles for regular use.
Electricity
Prepaid meters
Top up your prepaid electricity meter using your meter number. The token is delivered to your phone via SMS or in the app.
Vouchers
Online and gaming
Buy vouchers for online services and gaming platforms. Vouchers arrive with a code you enter on the service you're using.
Every Wallet purchase follows the same three-step flow. Once you've done it once, the rest are muscle memory.
Airtime, data, electricity, or a voucher. Each has its own section in the app. Pick the one you want.
A mobile number for airtime or data. Your meter number for electricity. The service for a voucher. Enter the amount you want to buy, and the app shows you the total.
The amount comes out of your Wallet. Airtime, data, and vouchers arrive within seconds. Electricity tokens usually arrive within a minute or two by SMS.
All major South African mobile networks are supported: MTN, Vodacom, Cell C, and Telkom. You can top up your own phone, or top up another number, which is useful for sending airtime to family who don't have their own way to pay.
Data bundles work the same way. Choose the network, choose the bundle size, and the amount comes out of your Wallet. The data is credited to the number you entered within seconds.
If you have a prepaid electricity meter, you can top up straight from your Wallet. Enter your meter number, choose how much electricity you want to buy in rand, confirm from your Wallet, and the electricity token comes to your phone by SMS. Punch the token into your meter and you're topped up.
Most prepaid meters in South Africa are supported, whether that's Eskom directly or your municipality's prepaid system. Keep your meter number saved somewhere easy to find; it's a long number that you'll re-enter every time.
A useful habit
Prepaid meters give you no grace period when the units run out. If yours dips below the equivalent of a day or two of usage, top up right then. You'll never find yourself in the dark hunting for your meter number by torchlight.
Vouchers give you a code you can use on the service they're for. Common categories in the Mama Money app include vouchers for gaming platforms, online services, and popular voucher brands used at retailers for online payments.
Buying works the same way as everything else: pick the voucher type, pick the amount, confirm from your Wallet, and the voucher code lands in the app or on your phone. Save the code somewhere safe until you're ready to use it.
Airtime. Data. Electricity. Vouchers. Money home. All from one app, one Wallet, one place you already have.
