Setting Up a Monthly Support Routine for Family in China from South Africa

You have parents or grandparents in China. You want to know they're looked after every month, whether or not you get around to thinking about it that week. You want the send to happen the same way, on the same day, without you needing to remember what wallet, what mobile number, what amount. You want it to be one of those things in your life that just works.

Setting up a monthly support routine with Mama Money takes a few minutes the first time, and then it repeats itself for as long as you need it to. This guide walks through how to set it up cleanly, how to plan around your cashflow and the Chinese cultural calendar, and what to do when life shifts and the plan needs to bend.

Why a routine works better than one-offs

Sending money whenever you remember, whenever guilt catches up with you, whenever a parent asks: it works, but it's stressful. It also means the money arrives in an unpredictable pattern for your family, which makes it harder for them to plan their month around what you send.

💬

Peace of mind

For both sides

You know your parents got what they needed this month. Your parents know when to expect it. Nobody's waiting, nobody's guessing, nobody feels awkward asking.

📅

Easier planning

Money that arrives on schedule

Your family can plan around a fixed monthly amount arriving on a fixed date. Bills, groceries, medical costs, savings: all become predictable in a way one-off transfers never allow.

Set it up once, repeat in a few taps

The first time you send to a family member in China takes a few minutes, because you're entering their wallet details and confirming the account. Every send after that is faster, because Mama Money remembers the recipient. You just tap in, enter the amount, and confirm.

1
Confirm the recipient details

Get your parent's or grandparent's full name (as it appears on their wallet account) and their mobile number linked to that wallet. Copy the mobile number from a message they sent you rather than retyping. Confirm which wallet they use most.

2
Send your first transfer

Open the Mama Money app, select China, enter the details, review the rate and fee, and confirm. If you're new to sending to China, our complete guide to sending money to China walks through the full flow.

3
Save the recipient in the app

After your first successful send, the recipient is saved. Next month, they appear on your list and you can send to them with a few taps instead of retyping everything.

4
Set a monthly reminder for yourself

Add a repeating reminder on your phone for the day you want to send (payday, first of the month, whichever suits). Two-minute effort, twelve months of coverage.

Choose your monthly rhythm

There is no single right day of the month to send. There are only rhythms that suit your cashflow and your family's needs. A few common patterns:

Rhythm Who it suits Why it works
Send on payday Salaried employees You send the moment the money hits your account, so it doesn't get spent on other things first.
Send on the 1st Families whose parents pay bills at month-start Money arrives just as parents are working out their monthly budget in China.
Send mid-month Freelancers, small business owners with irregular income Mid-month gives you time to see how the month is running and adjust the amount if needed.
Send weekly Very tight cashflow, or supporting an elderly parent with daily care costs Smaller, more frequent sends can feel more manageable than one large monthly transfer.

Ask your family too

The right rhythm is a two-sided decision.

Ask your parents when they'd find it most useful to receive the money. If they pay their utility bills at month-start, sending on the 1st matters more than sending on the 15th. If they're saving your monthly amount rather than spending it, the exact date matters less. A one-minute conversation makes the whole year smoother.

Plan for the Chinese cultural calendar

A monthly routine is the base. On top of that, most families send extra amounts around specific occasions during the year. Building these into your annual plan means you're not caught by surprise, and your parents get the acknowledgment that comes with the moment.

  • Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year): the biggest annual sending moment for many families. Hongbao (red envelopes) are exchanged, elderly parents receive amounts from their children, and the whole festival period runs for about two weeks. See our full guide on sending hongbao for Chinese New Year for timing, amounts, and etiquette.
  • Mid-Autumn Festival: a family-focused festival in early autumn. Many families send an extra amount for mooncakes, gatherings, and gifts for grandparents.
  • Parents' birthdays: milestone birthdays (particularly the 60th, 70th, and 80th, which have special cultural weight) often call for a larger send than the usual monthly.
  • Medical or unexpected needs: a one-off top-up rather than a routine send, but easier to send quickly when you already have your parents saved as a recipient in the app.
Marking these dates in your calendar at the start of the year, alongside your monthly send date, means you're never scrambling to organise a hongbao the night before New Year's Eve.

When to consider Higher Limits

The Standard Mama Money limit is R25,000 per order and R25,000 per month. For most monthly support sends to parents in China, that's comfortably enough.

You may want to think about upgrading to the Higher Limit if:

  • Your monthly amount is bumping close to R25,000 and you don't want to risk running into the ceiling.
  • You want to send an extra amount for Chinese New Year, a birthday, or a medical need on top of your regular monthly, and the combined total would exceed the Standard limit.
  • You are supporting more than one household in China, and the sum across all your monthly sends adds up close to the ceiling.
Limit tier Per order Per month
StandardR25,000R25,000
Higher LimitR50,000R100,000

To upgrade, tap "Increase Limits" in the Mama Money app and follow the prompts. You will need to upload a couple of extra documents depending on your ID type. See the Mama Money limits page for what's required.

When life shifts, the routine bends

A monthly routine is a base, not a promise carved in stone. Things happen. The routine should serve you, not the other way around.

  • ✓ Unexpected costs at home in SA. Some months, your own bills are heavier. Send a smaller amount that month, and message your parents to let them know. Most parents understand, and consistent communication matters more than the exact amount every single month.
  • ✓ Extra needs on the China side. A parent needs unexpected medical care. A grandparent has a fall. Send an extra amount straight away using your saved recipient. Two taps, no re-entering details.
  • ✓ You're travelling to China to visit. Some senders pause the monthly for the month they're physically there. Others keep it going so it's ready when they return home to SA. Whichever suits your family, it's a conversation to have before you fly.
  • ✓ A parent's needs change over time. Support amounts often grow gradually as parents age, particularly when medical or care costs increase. Review your monthly amount once a year, or after any big change in their situation.

The one thing that matters most

Consistent communication, more than a perfectly regular send.

Life will interrupt any routine eventually. What holds up over time is talking to your parents about what you're sending, why, and when. The Mama Money app tells you and them exactly what arrived and when. Use that as a starting point, not a substitute, for the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I set up automatic monthly transfers with Mama Money?
Mama Money doesn't run scheduled auto-debit transfers currently. What we do is save your recipient once, so setting up your monthly send takes a few taps instead of a full setup each time. Set a repeating monthly reminder on your phone and the whole process takes under a minute.
Does the fee change if I send every month?
No. The fee stays 5% or less, capped at R250 per transfer, whether you send once a year or twelve times. There is no monthly subscription and no penalty for sending more or less often.
What happens if I miss a month?
Nothing at Mama Money's end. Your account stays open and ready. When you're ready to send again, your saved recipient is still there. If you want to send twice in one month to catch up, you can, as long as the total stays within your monthly limit.
Can I send to more than one family member in China each month?
Yes. Save each recipient once, and send to whichever ones you need each month. Each transfer is its own order, and your total across all of them counts toward your monthly limit.
What if my monthly send is bigger than R25,000?
Upgrade to the Higher Limit, which allows up to R50,000 per order and R100,000 per month. Tap "Increase Limits" in the app to start. See the Mama Money limits page for the documents you'll need.
Is Mama Money safe for regular transfers to China?
Yes. Mama Money is licensed by the South African Reserve Bank and ISO 9001 certified, with over 20 million transactions processed. Every transfer to China goes through regulated payment infrastructure. Encryption and an OTP protect every transaction.
Where can I read the full how-to guide for sending to China?
Our complete guide to sending money to China from South Africa covers the full mechanics: registration, wallet options, fees, limits, and everything else.
