Half of everyday life in South Africa runs on a card. You need one for Uber. You need one for Spotify. You need one to check out on Takealot or get your Sixty60 groceries delivered. And if you are a foreign national, getting a working card from a traditional bank can be a months-long ordeal of paperwork, proof-of-address requests, and appointments that go nowhere.
The Mama Money Card takes that friction off the table. It arrives in your hand within days, it works with the apps and services you already use, and it does everything a South African-issued card does. This guide walks through how to make it your primary daily-use card, from your morning Uber to your weekly grocery delivery.
Your Mama Money Card works out of the box with all three major South African ride-hailing apps. Add it once, and it becomes the default payment method for every ride.
Uber
Add as payment method
Open the Uber app, go to Wallet, tap Add Payment Method, then enter your Mama Money Card details. The card sets as your default and works on every ride from that point.
Bolt
Payments in the Bolt app
In the Bolt app, tap the payments icon at the top-right, then Add card, and enter your Card details. Bolt uses it automatically for future rides.
InDrive
In-app cashless
In InDrive, open the menu, choose Payment methods, and add your Card. You can then switch between cash and card on individual trips.
The Card works with Spotify Premium, both monthly and yearly plans. Set it as your Spotify payment method the same way you would any card, and your subscription continues without interruption.
A useful thing to think about: your Card carries a R29 monthly fee. If Spotify Premium is around R60 a month, your true monthly digital cost (card fee plus subscription) is closer to R89. Worth knowing so you plan accurately, not so you avoid the Card. The Card unlocks other daily-life services that would otherwise be out of reach.
These streaming services have specific card-acceptance rules that the Mama Money Card is not currently on. If your streaming plan is important, keep a second card or use a family member's account until this changes. For everything else on this list, the Card works reliably.
Both major South African online retailers work with the Card. Takealot for everything from electronics to household goods, and Shein for fashion. Enter your Card at checkout the same way you would any bank-issued card.
Takealot
South Africa's biggest online store
Add the Card at checkout. Takealot may prompt you for a 3D Secure verification on some purchases, which comes through as an OTP in the Mama Money app. Enter it to complete the payment.
Shein
Global fashion, SA delivery
Card works at checkout. If the transaction is declined, check that you have enough in your Wallet and that the delivery address is accepted by Shein for your area.
Sixty60 is Checkers' 60-minute grocery delivery service, and it might be the single most useful app for foreign nationals living in South Africa. No car needed, no queue, no delivery-driver cash awkwardness. The Card works with Sixty60 out of the box.
Set up your Sixty60 profile, add the Card as your payment method, and you can have groceries at your door within an hour of ordering. A typical monthly grocery basket for two people (around R2,500) charges cleanly to the Card without issue.
Why this matters
For many foreign nationals in South Africa, the extra cost of not having a car quietly shapes daily life: Uber trips to buy groceries, walking with heavy bags, or paying for delivery from smaller local shops. Sixty60 with your Card cuts that cost meaningfully, and gives you the same convenience as any South African resident.
Four steps get you from a fresh Card to a fully working daily-use setup.
Once your Card arrives, activate it in the app. Set your PIN. This is your identity for every future purchase.
Add money by EFT from any bank, or with cash at a retail partner like Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Spar, Makro, or Game. Whatever is in your Wallet is what your Card can spend.
Uber, Bolt, InDrive, Spotify, Takealot, Shein, Sixty60. Once, and each app remembers it. The whole process takes maybe 15 minutes across all your apps.
Your first Uber, your first Sixty60 order, your first Takealot purchase. It behaves exactly like any other card.
A few small habits keep everything running smoothly.
One Card. Every app. Everyday South African digital life, without the traditional bank paperwork.
